I think part of it is because of a lack of exposure. I mean, this must seem really selfish, but it seems like only a small handful of people ever read or look at my stuff, while there are loads of fanfiction writers whose styles have not improved in years, but continue to get loads of faves from adoring fans.
What is with this stigma that surrounds fanfiction that makes it istantly more appealing than other writing? Is it just because it's easier to visualise? Less work to think about? No wonder most of these stories read like bad scripts for episodes that were left on the cutting room floor. And don't think that I think I'm above that kind of thing; I used to write absolutely horrid fanfiction, and I did so until quite recently, now that I realize it. And come to think of it, in those earlier days I DID get loads of 'this is great, I want to see more' comments. This seems to be a central problem with the DA community, as well as other ones at large. Fanart/Fanfiction is more likely to get recognition and generate interest than more ambitious things.
